I use two search engines in my personal life. One is my mother and one is my mother in law. Any information about anyone, any occasion in the family they are the ones to bring it up on the search results.
My family members are like separate websites with their own information. And even I am a website as they send out information to other members too

First and foremost is getting indexed by the Search Engines. I have many relatives across the Globe but I hardly know all of them until and unless they pop up in my Search Engines. So getting indexed is of primary importance. For example a new born baby to my cousin, new bride for my mother in law’s aunt’s son’s wife’s brother. Some may be already existing like my mother’s grandfather’s aunt’s daughter in law’s brother’s son’s daughter etc. So these relatives and their information come up when they are indexed

High PR pages in my Search Engines are those of my Father, Father in Law, Grandparents in law, Sister and Brother. Any information posted on these sites gets high visibility in the Search engines. So when my aunt’s son ie my cousin was getting married, apart from informing my mother even my sister and brother were informed so that they could again create a link back to my mother who will give me the information for sure as it was backed by links from my siblings.Getting registered in the High PR links is slightly difficult as they filter information and are difficult to access.

After marriage I came across a tradition called “Adda” this is the act by which all the sites I mean relatives exchange information which is in turn gathered by my mother in law and now even my mother who has become a part of the ritual. Information with a lot of backlink ie references from different relatives and different gossips come topmost in the search results. More the number of links better the search page rank.

Any fresh news / content is sure to come up in the Search Engines. They make sure that I get the information even if I am not looking for it but my search phrase is remotely close to what they want to share ( human nature unlike bots is slightly biased )

So my relatives who have fresh and original content and are well linked with my other relatives, socialize with them and have lot of inbound connections, come up in the search engines and I as a user am always up to date with their information.

Keep Searching..

Both may seem similar but they are two different roles or steps in business growth. Both go hand in hand and are complimentary to each other. Without the other each activity is futile.

Marketing is more generic and informative. The main aim of marketing is to attract target or prospects towards the product/service. Marketing can be done on a one to one basis usually in the B2B segment or many to one basis in the B2C sector. Direct marketing techniques, ATL activities are an example of Marketing. Through these the prospect is attracted towards the product.

Selling or sales is the next step. Once the prospect is attracted towards the product it is the sales strategy which helps in closing the deal and generating revenue for the business. The main aim of sales is revenue. Sales happens on a one to one basis in the B2B as well as the B2C segment.

One may get confused with the online segment of business as each marketing strategy is wrongly interpreted as a means to drive sale. Sale on an online portal happens only when the customer is happy with what he sees online. The portal is like a shop and the product descriptions, images etc are like salesmen and the payment gateway as the billing counter. In case these do not appeal to the customer he may not buy any product. Marketing techniques are used to drive traffic to the website. Once that is done it is the sales material on the website that needs to be effective to convert the traffic to revenue driven sale.

Some may lay more emphasis on sales strategy to generate more revenue. But that is not beneficial in the long run. Sales and marketing strategy should compliment each other. Both are equally important for the growth of an organization.

Amidst the confusion in the kitchen the line from the Chef ” Blue team is losing because they are not Communicating” stood out during one of the episodes in Masterchef Australia.

It is so true. In any sphere of work if there is no communication there can be no team work and if there is no team work there can be no success stories. It will be a slow race to the finish. To compliment each other you should understand each other which is possible only through effective communication.

Effective communication is always two sided. Before sending out a communication specially through mail or any other media where you are not physically present to solicit a response you should make sure that you frame the communication from the perspective of the receiver. ” Put yourself in the other person’s shoes” or rather in front of the other person’s mailbox.

“What is there in it for me?” A question you should ask before sending out the message. If you feel the answer is not convincing then your message is also not convincing.

Keep your message short, simple and meaningful.

No…..is the general answer and it is true to a major extent.
Lets first identify the main aim or rather what we expect of the two activities
Branding – Credibility
Marketing – Sales

In practice you cant drive sales unless your customer trusts you. To build that trust and gain the visibility, the recall we need branding
Also when we market we market not only the product or the service but also the brand

The marketing activities also carry the brand with them. Therefore marketing is not exclusive of branding

Coming to branding…. to establish credibility and visibility you do not need sales ( you definitely need the money though) Branding can also be done by imparting information or knowledge about the industry, sponsoring events etc. Branding can be done without a call for sale.
Therefore branding can be exclusive. Any activity which gives visibilty or endorses the expertise/quality of the company or its product and services can be termed as a branding activity and in these cases they do not come with direct sales.

Therefore to conclude we can say that branding can be done without marketing but no marketing can be done without branding.

There is no thumb rule or principle for a successful marketing strategy. What works for one will necessarily and definitely not work for the other even if it is the same business, product or service.

A strategy relies on several factors for its success and one of the major factor is consumer behavior or reaction towards the action. Newtons law of every action has an equal and opposite reaction may hold good for objects but when it comes to the human mind it follows no rules. Therefore due to the diversity in human nature Strategies cannot be Universal.

What worked can only be a guiding principle. Innovation is the key to successful marketing.

Stop Think Remember Act

Posted: September 6, 2011 in Uncategorized

A silent sigh
As they walk by
With blood stained hands and sweaty brows
They go on I just wonder how

They stand there silent
waiting for their death
And with each passing moment
Giving the murderers life saving breath

Standing tall
Shading us all
Home for the birds, memories of childhood
But for the murderers they are just pieces of wood

Why cant we become their voice
Save them from the bloody hands
Lets rise together…
Else our eyes would thirst for green
And there would be none to be seen

Save trees…..

Disruption is the Key

Posted: September 4, 2011 in Uncategorized

How can we measure the extent to which a venture can be succesful? Disruption

Man follows a routine, has preferences, makes choices everyday. Some through their sub conscious, some through research and study and some at the spur of the moment or at impulse.

A product or service which can disrupt the routine to make things easier is a sure success.
When google was in the inception stage little did men gauge the way their lives were going to change. It is now that we see that google has drastically changed the way data or information was aquired. It in short disrupted the method of information search

Similarly, Facebook. It is the most widely used portal for networking, catching up with friends, staying up to date with recent happenings with your friends. It disrupted the method of staying in touch or socializing.

Therefore a good B Plan will have a high disruptive quotient. Disruption leads to change and as we all know…change is the only constant thing in the world.

From an investment point of view for a successful investment one needs to predict the changing waves and back the factor leading to it.
